May Car with a Cause Early Bird,  2021 Scholarship Winner Elly, and a discussion on York Ready for Climate Action!

Our June 6, 2025 Meeting Didn’t Disappoint!

We kicked things off with some excitement as Brad and his helper Elly spun the drum and drew the May Early Bird Car with a Cause winner—congratulations to lucky ticket #282!

Next up was Elly Bergoine, a past York Rotary Club scholarship recipient who’s heading into her senior year at the University of Maine. Elly shared an inspiring update on her journey. She’s studying Finance and Business, and this past year, she served as a teaching assistant helping fellow students navigate campus life. She also represented the Business Program as an Ambassador, traveling to Boston once a month.

And she’s not slowing down for summer! Elly will be interning with the Department of Education in Operations and Events while also waitressing weekends at Inn on the Blues. Keep an eye on this remarkable young woman—she’s going places, and we couldn’t be more proud!

Our featured speaker was Mac McAbee from the York Ready for Climate Action committee. Mac shared the history of YRCA, which began in May 2018 as York Ready for 100%—a grassroots movement born out of local frustration with the lack of climate action. Over time, the group expanded to include initiatives like York Eco Homes and Waste Reduction and Diversion (WRAD). In 2022, they became an official 501(c)(3) nonprofit under the name York Ready for Climate Action.

Today, they’re a passionate team of volunteers working to raise awareness about climate change and drive meaningful reductions in emissions for the good of our community and our planet. Mac highlighted several YRCA programs, including:

  • EcoHomes

  • Energy Coaches

  • The Annual Climate Action Fair

  • The Household Equity Fund

The Household Equity Fund is a new initiative designed to help low-income homeowners in York bridge the gap between project costs and available state rebates or incentives. This enables families to install energy-efficient upgrades like heat pumps, insulation, and air sealing—making homes more comfortable, energy-efficient, and affordable.

A fundraising event is being planned for York Ready for Climate Action, and will be held at the Viewpoint Hotel on the Nubble. It will be called "Party at the Point". Hours are 4-7pm. Tickets available shortly.  Visit their website for more information.
