Press Release:YORK, Maine – The Rotary Club of York recently donated $5,000 to aid relief efforts in Japan following the March 11 earthquake and tsunami. The funds were donated to the Rotary Japan 2011 Disaster Recovery Fund, established through Rotary International to support long-term recovery projects in affected areas of Japan.

“The vote of the club was unanimous,” said President James Bartlett, a York attorney. “The people of Japan are going to be needing help for a long time, and we are glad we can provide some assistance.”

Rotarians and non-Rotarians alike can donate to the fund. Since it was established, more than $500,000 has been donated.

"The great thing about Rotarians is that we share everything, including each other's joy and sadness. They have the ability to put themselves in the position of others and act to help," said Rotary International President-nominee Sakuji Tanaka. "Despite the unthinkable hardship we're experiencing now, the people of Japan will not give up on efforts to rebuild their communities."
